• Display Technology in Smartphones

    Four types of display technologies dominate the market and there are few others which are worth knowing.

    Key display technologies in smartphones

     

    • LCD (Liquid Crystal Display) is a widely used display technology for smartphones. Light is passed from two layers of liquid crystals.

     

    It is important to know that LCD needs a light source as they do not emit light.

    This is further divided into two parts.

     

    • TFT LCD (Thin-film Transistor Liquid Crystal Display) was first display technology used in iPhone in 2007 and in first android phone.

     

    This technology is about producing displays using transistors.

     

    • Pixel: one pixel can have 4 transistors for easy switching. The technique is costlier to produce.
    • Contrast Ratio: High contrast ratio.
    • Colour: Colour reproduction is not natural.
    • Price: cheaper but not as cheap as IPS LCD.
    • IPS LCD (In-Plane Switching Liquid Crystal Display) re-arranges molecules of crystals for better view angles.
    • Pixel: Packed closely together than TFT display.
    • Contrast Ratio: High contrast ratio than TFT.
    • Colour: Colour reproduction is natural.
    • Price: cheaper than TFT.
      Lower energy consumption than TFT makes them a favourite choice of many OEM.

    • OLED (Organic light-emitting diode) is the latest technology in smart displays. This display does not depend on another light source.

    • Contrast Ratio: High contrast ratio than LCD.
    • Colour: Colour reproduction is natural.

     

    Price: costlier than LCD.
    Black displays will consume less power with OLED.

     

    • AMOLED (Active Matrix Organic light-emitting diode) is the superior technology in smart displays. Like OLED it contains more control per pixel. The touch sensor is not part of the screen.
    • Pixel: Each pixel is controlled by more than one light source. Gives better control than OLED.
    • Light: Deeper bright colour and darker black colours are displayed.

     

    AMOLED had poor visibility in sunlight.

    • S-AMOLED (Super Active-Matrix Organic light-emitting diode) uses an architectural change. The touch sensor is part of the screen.

    • Light: S-AMOLED is better in displaying even in sunlight. So right now S-AMOLED gives best viewing angles and better sunlight visibility.

     

    It is also using lesser power so clearly, S-AMOLED is upcoming technology.
