What is the Best Field for Mechanical and Electrical Engineers?

Heating Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC) is by far the best field for mechanical and electrical engineers. The scope for employment in this field is endless both in India and abroad as far as engineers are concerned. They will be able to build a rewarding career as an HVAC engineer. All that fresh engineers, and even those who have a couple of years of experience, have to do is enroll for a course in one of the professional HVAC training institutions in Kerala. This will enable them to secure their future.

What are the various types of air conditioning systems?

The climatic condition of a country is dependent on factors such as the terrain and ambient temperature. Climatic conditions vary from one country to another. Therefore, it is essential for people to manage all types of adverse ambient conditions either artificially or otherwise. Actually, it is such requirements of human beings that lead to new and great inventions. From Gulf countries that experience higher ambient temperatures to European countries that experience extreme cold conditions, the field of engineering that enables them to enjoy comfortable living conditions is HVAC. An HVAC system controls the ambient temperature and quality of air inside vehicles and buildings and creates a comfortable ambience for the occupants.

Today, different types of air conditioners such as Split Air Conditioners, Centralized Air Conditioners, and Cassette Air Conditioners that cater to different requirements are available in the market. In this post, we will provide some key information about each of these air conditioners. And, we will start our discussion with the Centralized Air Conditioner which is best suited for large HVAC projects.

What is a Centralised Air conditioning system?

A centralized air conditioning system is used when a large area has to be covered. For example, shopping malls, theatres, and auditoriums use centralized AC systems. In a centralized air conditioning system, the air is cooled with the help of different equipment, transported through ducts made of sheet metal, and supplied to spaces the ambient conditions need to be maintained. Central AC plants are generally installed slightly away from the main buildings. The quantity of air required to make each room comfortable is sent through ducts.

In the HVAC systems installed in large projects, water is cooled mainly with the help of a chiller plant. The cold water is then circulated through pipes of a building’s Air Handling Unit (AHU) and Fan Coil Unit (FCU). The fans attached to the AHU and FCU draw air over the cold water pipes, transport the cold air through ducts and deliver it to different rooms in the required quantity. That’s why the centralized air conditioning arrangement is suitable for large projects.

    • Further, job opportunities are very high in this field as these systems are widely used all over the world. As a result, courses such as AC mechanic training and six-month-long Diploma in Refrigeration and Air Conditioning assume a lot of importance.

    What is A Chiller Plant?

Chiller plants are mainly installed in commercial and industrial projects. A chiller system is nothing but a refrigeration system. Water passing through a chiller becomes cold and this water is used to cool the air. A chiller works on either vapour compression cycle or absorption compression cycle. Further, different types of chiller systems are being used these days. They include the Air Condensed Chiller, Water Condensed Chiller, and Evaporative Condensed Chiller. The most commonly used type of chiller is the Water Condensed Chiller and we will discuss this in detail here.

Water condensed chillers can be further categorized into four: Reciprocating, Centrifugal, Screw Driven, and Absorption Chiller Systems. The first three are mechanical chillers and they need to be driven by an electric motor, or a steam or gas turbine. The Absorption Chiller, on the other hand, works using the heat of steam. As a result, there are no moving parts in an Absorption Chiller. Therefore, this system does not require as much maintenance as others. Further, the efficiency of the Absorption Chiller is much higher. As it is much easier to manage the temperature, Reciprocating, Centrifugal, Screw Driven Chiller systems are mostly used by commercial projects.

In mechanical chiller systems, four important components are required to make the functioning of the compression cycle smooth. They are the evaporator, compressor, condenser, and expansion valve. When it comes to evaporators, the most commonly used types are the Shell and Tube Evaporator and the Brazed Plate Evaporator. In the former type of evaporator, the refrigerant passes through tubes and water passes through the shell. This is how the water is cooled. Typically, three types of compressors are used in mechanical chiller systems: reciprocating, centrifugal, and screw-type compressors.

Another important part of an HVAC chiller system is the cooling tower which cools down the water that is circulated through the condenser with the help of a pump.  The water pumped through the condenser falls from the top of the cooling tower across the fins to the sump at the bottom. It is the high-velocity fan fixed on the cooling tower that reduces the temperature of the water returning from the condenser. Further, the cooling tower is also fitted with filters to remove the dust and other particles. In addition, there is a float valve arrangement to add water to make up the water level in the sump.

If we examine the chiller plant cycle, the cold water from the cooling tower enters the condenser and gets cooled down further. The chilled water from the condenser then passes through the compressor and evaporator and gets cooled to even lower temperatures. From there the water is pumped to the AHU and FCU of a building. The chilled water absorbs the heat from the rooms through which it is circulated and returns to the evaporator. This water then passes through an expansion valve to the condenser and is then pumped back to the cooling tower. This is what happens in one cycle of the HVAC chiller system.

What is a Cassette Type Air Conditioner?

Cassette-type air conditioners are used in projects where the ambient temperature of a few office rooms has to be maintained at a comfortable level. This type of air conditioner is also used in places where there is space restriction. This is due to the non-availability of sufficient wall space for fixing split air conditioners and a lack of ceiling height as well for running ducts. Cassette air conditioning systems are normally installed at the ceiling level. The cooling capacity of a cassette air conditioner is decided on the basis of the room size, the heat likely to be generated by the electronic devices available there, and the body temperature of the number of people that are likely to come and go.

This type of air conditioner is very efficient. From an interior design point of view, these air conditioners are capable of enhancing the appearance of a room. These are a couple of reasons why cassette air conditioners are used in many offices.

This, in turn, has created opportunities for qualified people to work as air conditioning mechanics and repair cassette-type air conditioners. Further, there are many AC mechanism training institutions in Kerala. These institutions conduct AC mechanic training and refrigeration and air conditioning training courses which open up employment opportunities both within and outside India.

    Split Air Conditioner

Split air conditioners are widely used in homes and one-room shops for maintaining the ambient temperature at a comfortable level. These are a subcategory of window-type air conditioners. Based on the size of a room and the temperature level to be maintained, split air conditioners of different capacities can be purchased from the market. Split air conditioners come with indoor and outdoor units.  The indoor unit is fixed on a wall of the room to be cooled. The outdoor unit is installed outside the room on the wall or on the sunshade. The outdoor unit consists of the compressor, and condenser and expansion coils. The indoor unit houses the cooling coil, long blower, and air filter. Unlike other systems, these air conditioners don’t need any ducting work. As a result, these air conditioners can be installed quickly and easily. Moreover, split air conditioners can be installed with the help of an air conditioning technician.

Split air conditioners are widely used in homes and offices. Therefore, there are plenty of opportunities to work as an air conditioning technician for installing and maintaining these air conditioners. In order to take advantage of these job opportunities, there are many institutions that offer AC mechanic training and six-month-long refrigeration and air conditioning training courses. However, it is important to choose the best institute that provides high-quality AC mechanic training courses.

The HVAC industry is continuously evolving as well as growing. In today’s world, the HVAC system is an unavoidable requirement in shopping malls, hospitals, homes, and offices. That is why there are job opportunities even in HVAC-related industries and the importance of courses such as AC mechanic training and six-months refrigeration and air conditioning training is on the rise. Even those who have completed SSLC or +2 can get high-paying jobs in India and abroad if they successfully complete the Diploma In Refrigeration and Air Conditioning course.
