What is A Chiller Plant?
Chiller plants are mainly installed in commercial and industrial projects. A chiller system is nothing but a refrigeration system. Water passing through a chiller becomes cold and this water is used to cool the air. A chiller works on either vapour compression cycle or absorption compression cycle. Further, different types of chiller systems are being used these days. They include the Air Condensed Chiller, Water Condensed Chiller, and Evaporative Condensed Chiller. The most commonly used type of chiller is the Water Condensed Chiller and we will discuss this in detail here.
Water condensed chillers can be further categorized into four: Reciprocating, Centrifugal, Screw Driven, and Absorption Chiller Systems. The first three are mechanical chillers and they need to be driven by an electric motor, or a steam or gas turbine. The Absorption Chiller, on the other hand, works using the heat of steam. As a result, there are no moving parts in an Absorption Chiller. Therefore, this system does not require as much maintenance as others. Further, the efficiency of the Absorption Chiller is much higher. As it is much easier to manage the temperature, Reciprocating, Centrifugal, Screw Driven Chiller systems are mostly used by commercial projects.
In mechanical chiller systems, four important components are required to make the functioning of the compression cycle smooth. They are the evaporator, compressor, condenser, and expansion valve. When it comes to evaporators, the most commonly used types are the Shell and Tube Evaporator and the Brazed Plate Evaporator. In the former type of evaporator, the refrigerant passes through tubes and water passes through the shell. This is how the water is cooled. Typically, three types of compressors are used in mechanical chiller systems: reciprocating, centrifugal, and screw-type compressors.
Another important part of an HVAC chiller system is the cooling tower which cools down the water that is circulated through the condenser with the help of a pump. The water pumped through the condenser falls from the top of the cooling tower across the fins to the sump at the bottom. It is the high-velocity fan fixed on the cooling tower that reduces the temperature of the water returning from the condenser. Further, the cooling tower is also fitted with filters to remove the dust and other particles. In addition, there is a float valve arrangement to add water to make up the water level in the sump.
If we examine the chiller plant cycle, the cold water from the cooling tower enters the condenser and gets cooled down further. The chilled water from the condenser then passes through the compressor and evaporator and gets cooled to even lower temperatures. From there the water is pumped to the AHU and FCU of a building. The chilled water absorbs the heat from the rooms through which it is circulated and returns to the evaporator. This water then passes through an expansion valve to the condenser and is then pumped back to the cooling tower. This is what happens in one cycle of the HVAC chiller system.
What is a Cassette Type Air Conditioner?
Cassette-type air conditioners are used in projects where the ambient temperature of a few office rooms has to be maintained at a comfortable level. This type of air conditioner is also used in places where there is space restriction. This is due to the non-availability of sufficient wall space for fixing split air conditioners and a lack of ceiling height as well for running ducts. Cassette air conditioning systems are normally installed at the ceiling level. The cooling capacity of a cassette air conditioner is decided on the basis of the room size, the heat likely to be generated by the electronic devices available there, and the body temperature of the number of people that are likely to come and go.
This type of air conditioner is very efficient. From an interior design point of view, these air conditioners are capable of enhancing the appearance of a room. These are a couple of reasons why cassette air conditioners are used in many offices.
